A streak is a sequence of consecutive identical outcomes — for example, five reds in a row, or ten consecutive losses on an even-money bet. Streaks are a normal part of random sequences and occur more often than most people expect.
Understanding streak probabilities serves two purposes: it helps you set realistic expectations for how often extreme streaks will occur, and it helps you avoid the Gambler's Fallacy — the false belief that past results influence future spins.
The probability of any specific outcome occurring N times in a row is simply the single-spin probability raised to the power N:
P(N in a row) = pN
For red in European roulette (p = 18/37 ≈ 0.4865):
For a single number (p = 1/37 ≈ 0.02703):
| Streak Length | Red/Black (48.65%) | Column/Dozen (32.43%) | Single Number (2.70%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 in a row | 23.67% | 10.52% | 0.073% |
| 3 in a row | 11.52% | 3.41% | 0.002% |
| 5 in a row | 2.73% | 0.359% | 0.0000143% |
| 8 in a row | 0.322% | 0.012% | < 0.000001% |
| 10 in a row | 0.0730% | 0.00134% | < 0.000001% |
